How to Start a Kombucha Business

How to Start a Kombucha Business

A lot of people wonder how to start a Kombucha business because, well, it is one of the fastest-growing sub-segments of beverage production in recent times. And what’s more, it is still growing with unbelievable scale and profit potential.

But how exactly do you start a Kombucha business?

You start a kombucha business by charting out an extensive business plan, obtaining all necessary equipment, going through with the actual brewing, and of course marketing your final beverage in the most effective way possible.

Quick tip: An LLC is the best company structure for MOST Kombucha businesses. If you are ready to start your new company, we recommend you go with either ZenBusiness ($49) or IncFile ($0) to get your business structure set up correctly.

We also have a complete breakdown of the 7 best LLC services available in case you wanted to review your options.

In case all of these seem vague, don’t worry, below is a more detailed, step-by-step guide on starting your kombucha business. We go over the legal areas of establishing your business, the necessary equipment needed for a smooth operation, and the profit potential and costs of scaling your business.

Why You Should Start a Kombucha Business

As mentioned above, kombucha is one of the fastest-growing groups of beverage production in recent times. Not only has it greatly picked up in terms of market share over the years, it also has great potential regarding what’s to come.

For instance, it is estimated that by 2026, the market size of kombucha business will hit $6.2 billion dollars.

Add these with the fact that it really doesn’t take too much to begin the business, you start to get a clearer picture as to why it would be almost criminal to not start a Kombucha business if you can.

Step 1: Planning Your Business

The fact that you’re going to be running a Kombucha business, no matter the size and scale, does not indicate that you would not have to chart a business course. You chart a business plan for your kombucha business just as you would for an Etsy business, or a used-car business.

In short, regardless of whichever industry you choose to enter, and which avenue and marketing strategy you choose to employ, planning is the key to success.

And what’s more? It is also your means of defense against failure. There is nothing that spells doom more than entering into an investment journey without carrying out through research and planning beforehand.

It is also worth mentioning that your business plan in this case has to include delivery strategy, and, most importantly, cost planning.

Cost Planning

Cost planning a business involves identifying beforehand the monetary expenses and resources needed to get the business off the ground, and moving seamlessly.

It is highly important to spend as much time on cost planning mainly because one of the biggest challenges you can face in a business is to get a satisfactory point where everything is starting to look rosy, and then hit a painful snag thanks to lack of sufficient funds.

And when it comes to a Kombucha business, regardless of the nuances involved, cost planning is just as important as in any other business.

What are the Costs of Getting the Business Going?

The costs of getting a Kombucha business started include the cost of acquiring necessary equipment, the cost of bottling and packaging your finished product, and the cost of marketing and promotion.

Of course, this all depends on scale. For instance the sophistication of your brewing equipment is all dependent on how big or small you’re starting out.

Starting out on a small scale in your home will not require as much sophisticated equipment as it would if you were to start on a larger scale. Same goes for the cost of packaging, and promotion.

There is also the cost of a proper legal setup, licensing, certifications, and nutritional analysis.

All in all, we estimate that if you’re going to set up a kombucha brewery at home on a small scale to start with, you can come up with a perfect system for about $1000.

What are the Recurring Costs?

The recurring costs involved in running a Kombucha business are down to the costs of maintaining equipment, keeping promotion campaigns going, and acquiring needed supplies for bottling and labelling.

And then there are the costs incurred when you start to scale your business as you go, which we will discuss further in the coming sections.

Step 2 – Target Market

Analyzing a target market ensures that you’re not just shooting a wild hail-mary shot in the wind. Instead, you have a targeted niche audience with a higher chance of a conversion.

So who is your target market as a Kombucha brewery runner? First of all, you can choose to appeal to folks who already have an affinity for Kombucha, or even go further and reach out to newer beverage lovers who are looking for something healthier and more satisfying.

The best part of Kombucha is that when people try it out, and learn of its health benefits, it’s hard to go back to drinking beers or other unhealthy beverages. And that’s one of your leverages.

How Exactly Does a Kombucha Business Make Money?

At the risk of sounding redundant, a computer business makes money by brewing Kombucha and selling to interested consumers. Depending on the scale, you may choose to sell directly to final consumers at a local farmer’s market, or in bulk to retailers and restaurants to sell on your behalf.

How Much Do You Charge Customers?

Depending on how established the brand is, a store-bought 16 pound bottle of kombucha may be sold at anything from $3 to $5.

How Much Profit Can a Kombucha Business Make

The size of your business determines how much you’re going to make, obviously, but another thing almost as important is your distribution strategy. Distribution is key when it comes to estimating the profit potential of your business.

Most states allow self-distribution and this can increase your earnings by about 50%. Choosing to go through a distributor, though, is a less stressful and more assured process as they (distributors) would already have the connection to gain access to shelves and placements that you may not.

Having a distributor also guarantees that pickup and delivery tasks are off your hands.

What are the Costs of Scaling?

The cost of scaling your Kombucha business involves getting bigger and better equipment, so that you increase your output by a significant margin. You will also have to profoundly increase your marketing expenditure, labor costs, and of course the legal costs of expanding to more states and territories.

What Types of Equipment Do I Need For a Kombucha Business?

Producing Kombucha on a small scale does not require such a high level of sophisticated equipment. Some of the most important things you’d need include a fermentation vessel, and you can easily make use of a large glass carboy for this purpose, for a small-scale operation from your home.

You also need some sort of racking cane system to move your Kombucha from the first vessel to another larger fermentation vessel, and of course, you need a filter and bottling equipment if you’re going to be bottling your Kombucha on your own.

For more information, you can consult any brewery or winery equipment supplier.

Looking to set up the perfect legal entity for your Kombucha business? For most people an LLC is the best way to protect your personal assets in your new business.

We recommend you go with either ZenBusiness ($49) or IncFile ($0) to set up your Kombucha business for success!

Naming Your Business

Ideally, for your Kombucha business, as well as any other business really, you should choose a name that stands out, and is easy to remember, and at the same time, is available for registration with the appropriate state body.

You should go through this step before filing your articles of organization – which will signify the official establishment of your LLC, or whichever company structure you choose to go with.

Register For Taxes

You register your business for taxes by obtaining an official Employer Identification Number from the IRS, as well as other appropriate state organizations, depending on which particular state you choose to establish your company in.

Obtaining an EIN is a relatively simple affair and should not take up too much of your time.

Business Bank Account

No matter the business you choose to go into, your personal finances must always be separated from your business. This ensures that you’re safe from liability and are able to keep track of business growth better.

You can also use your business account to build a solid business credit that makes you eligible for an even greater range of financial benefits including business credit cards, better interest rates, and so on.

Step 4: Business Accounting

Business accounting is what comes next after opening a business bank account. Opening a business account, you see, is one thing, keeping proper track of your income and expenditure flow, is another.

Of course it doesn’t hurt to hire a proper accountant for this purpose if you can afford it. Professional accounting tasks are quite demanding, and time consuming. Having someone to take the chores off your hands is usually a luxury, especially when you’d rather have all your attention focused on other important aspects of running your Kombucha business.

Regardless of which way you choose to go, though, once your business really starts to grow, hiring an accountant may become more and more imperative.

Step 5: Permits and Licenses

Assuming that you would have done your research in the planning section regarding governmental laws and licensing, this is the point where you actually comply by acquiring all necessary licenses and permits.

Step 6: Business Insurance

Getting business insurance is not only great for keeping your business safe from unforeseen liabilities, it is also legally mandated and a no-brainer for any business owner.

The policy you choose to go for is up to you, as there are a lot of options in this regard for business owners.

Step 7: Defining Your Brand

Branding your business is as important for a kombucha business as it is for a national fast-food outlet – the reason for this is quite simple: it helps get your name out there in a way that ensures it sticks to the mind of customers and potential customers.

Having a recognizable brand also breeds trust and can bring in more customers than the most vigorous of advertisements.

Promotion and Marketing

Having a great brand, as mentioned above, is great for marketing, for a kombucha business as well as any other. And then there’s the peculiar fact that Kombucha Itself isn’t as popular as some other beverages. Now while some can choose to see it as a deterring factor, you should instead choose to see if as a propelling one.

It means that this great business is just waiting for people to come over and carve out their brands, and a share of the market.

So how do you promote your Kombucha product? You can choose to do this by striking a partnership with local beverage dealers, restaurants, running a discount sale on bulk purchases.

And of course you should always leverage the power of the internet by establishing a strong online presence. We discuss more on this below, but first, a few words about customer retention.

Customer Retention

Why is customer retention so important in a business? It’s simple, customer retention is one of the greatest forms of marketing. It is ultra-targeted marketing, without having to do any of the heavy lifting that comes with marketing to new customers.

With customer retention, you already have your set of customers, who have proven to be willing and capable of purchasing your product. The next thing to do then, on your part, is to ensure that they keep coming back, and even refer more people to your business.

So how do you ensure customer retention in your Kombucha business? By serving out high-quality products, of course. Add this with a dose of professionalism, customer service, and solid follow-up, and you will have yourself a self-sustaining business in little to no time.

Online Presence

Building an online presence is like having a fresh new supply of oxygen for your business. It is practically providing your business with a fresh, new source of revenue. And what’s more, there is no limitation to how far you can go.

Traditional marketing and local outreach are great. But in the 21st century, businesses that don’t expand their reach to the internet space have a lesser chance of survival that do.

By building an online presence, either through your search engine optimized website or social media pages, you are effectively helping new customers find you as easily and seamlessly as possible.

Step 8: What You Need To Enter into a Kombucha Business

Who is a Kombucha Business Suitable For?

A Kombucha business is suitable for anybody who has a love for beverages and has the general idea of how to brew this particular health-friendly beverage.

Now you don’t have to have a big restaurant or work at a brewery to get your home-based Kombucha going, but sometimes it does provide something of an edge, seeing as you would already have a few technical know-how in that line of business.

Skills and Experiences

The skills needed to start a kombucha business is the knowledge of how to brew the beverage in the first place. Having a prior experience working at a brewery, or running a brewery, or working at a restaurant with a brewery, can all come in really handy for those wanting to start a kombucha business.

What is the Growth Potential of a Kombucha Business?

The growth potential of brewing Kombucha is immense. It all comes from not just being able to produce more units, but also being able to enjoy the economies of scale that come with having enough experience and a solid setup upfront.

For instance, once you get the initial equipment costs out of the way, you will never have to pay for those things again, which means that as you brew more bottles of kombucha, your cost per unit becomes greatly reduced, and subsequently your net profit increases.

And the more you scale and get the initial costs out of the way, the higher the profit potential becomes. In no time your Kombucha business may be raking in higher six figures every year.

Find a Business Mentor

Finding a business mentor, no matter what niche or industry you choose to get into, can never hurt you. At worst you gain some knowledge you’ll hold on to forever, and at best you get people willing to work you through challenges and ensure that you do not make the same mistakes you did.

All in all, you end up with an easier path to success than you would have had without a mentor. So find someone you trust and respect who’s been through what you’re about to go through, and you’ll have a bigger chance of success.

Build a Team

Building a team ensures that you enjoy all the benefits that come with division of labor and economies of scale. Of course it goes without saying that once you get big enough, building a team becomes a priority. Every business has its moving parts, and no matter how savvy you are, as your business becomes bigger, it gets a lot harder to keep track of all of these moving parts on your own.

And this is where you start to build a team, to facilitate even more growth.

Search by Company

First, visit the North Carolina Secretary of State (SoS) website. This is where we’ll conduct our search. We’ll start with the search by company.

Step 1

When you open the SoS search page, a search by company will be selected automatically. From the drop-down menu below, you can select whether you want to search for companies whose names start with selected words, contains any or all selected words, and is an exact match. You can also search companies by SoS ID (Secretary of State Identification Number). Enter the words to search for, and click Search.

Step 2

You’ll get a list with all records that match your search criteria (if you’ve been searching by SoS ID, there’ll be either none or one result). The list will show the entity name, identification number, date of formation, status, and type. You’ll also see several icons you can use for different actions, such as ordering a document online, printing a pre-populated annual report form, adding the entity to your email notification list, or viewing document filings. You’ll need to sign in to use some of these services.

Step 3

If you want to get additional information for an entity, click on its name. Now you’ll be able to see more information, including the office and/or mailing address, company officials, name of the registered agent, annual report due date, etc.

Search by Registered Agents

The second search method we can use to perform business entity search in North Carolina is by registered agents.

Step 1

From the first drop-down menu, select Registered Agents as your search criteria. A new search box will appear below. You can use it to select the search type (organization or individual). Just like before, you can select whether you want to search for names that start with selected words, contain any or all of the words, or the name that is the exact match. Step 2

You’ll get a list with all the names, as well as the total number of representations.

Step 3

Click on any of the names for more details. You’ll see a list of all the entities represented by this registered agent, as well as the key information for each of the entities. From this page, you can add all listed entities to your email notification list.

Search by Company Officials

You can also search companies by their officials. This method is similar to the previous one.

Step 1

Change the search criteria to Company Officials, select whether you’re looking for an organization or an individual and if the name starts with the selected words, contains any or all of them, or is an exact match.

Step 2

Just like when we were searching for companies by registered agents, you’ll get a list of company officials and the total number of their representations.

Step 3

Click on any of the names, and you’ll see their representations, as well as their role in each of the business entities.

Search by Assumed Business Names

The last method we can use to search business entities in North Carolina is by assumed business name.

Step 1

Step 2

Enter the assumed nameowner, or SOSID according to the instructions below the search box. Below you can select the start and end dates, to only include assumed names which have filed a document during the selected time frame. To include all businesses, just leave these boxes blank. Select counties to search (if you don’t select anything, all counties will be searched). Click Search.

Step 3

You’ll get a list with names and identification numbers.

Step 4

To get more information, click on any of the names. Now you’ll see the date when the information was entered into the SoS statewide database of assumed business name information, as well as the county where it was filed in, the owner’s name, and the Assumed Business Names Certificate available in PDF.

The percent sign (%) should be used when you don’t know the exact name of the business entity you’re looking for, while the underscore (_) will match only a single unknown character.

You can also use boolean or logical operators. This will allow you to enter multiple words in a search.

  • AND – Use it when you want your search results to include all the entered words.
  • OR – Use it when you want your search results to include at least one of the entered words.
  • NOT – Use it when you want your search results to include the first of the entered words and not the other one.

Oregon Business Entity Search (Step-by-Step Guide)

We’ve created a step-by-step guide to the Oregon business entity search to help you understand how to use the Oregon Business Registry (OBR) to get the required search results and information about a certain business entity in the state of Oregon.

Oregon Business Entity Search

You can use Oregon’s Business Registry Database to perform a business entity search by a business name, a registry number, or by individual names. You can select whether you want to search only active, inactive, or all businesses.

And if you’ve just started thinking about forming a new business entity in Oregon, and would simply want to research whether the business name you’re thinking about is available, you can use the Business Name Availability Check function. If there are no active businesses on file with the selected business name, the search application will suggest that the name can be filed onto the state of Oregon records. However, the final decision is made by a filing officer at the time of filing.

Since now you know what this business entity search guide is all about, let’s start with search instructions!

Do you need your LLC forming quickly? Form your new business using ZenBusiness instead. They will do your Oregon business entity search, file all the paperwork, and make sure it’s 100% accurate!

Save yourself HOURS of painful forms and get your LLC formed quickly and easily.

Business Name Availability Check

We’ll start with the business name availability check. You should access the Business Name Search on the Oregon Secretary of State website (the Corporation Division).

Step 1

Select the Business Name Availability Check as your search method. Enter one or more words to the search bar above (marked as Business Name) and click on the Search for Business Name button below.

Step 2

If the name you searched for is available, you’ll get the following message “(the name you searched for) appears to be available, however Business Registry staff will make the final determination”.

Otherwise, the message will say “The following names may affect availability” and below you’ll get the key information for business entities that have the same (or similar) name. This is due to the fact that the Name Availability Check looks not only for the exact name but for names that might confuse your future clients and customers. So, even though the name you searched for may seem technically available, you should pay attention to words that sound alike but aren’t spelled the same.

Step 3

You can click on the hyperlinked entity name or registry number for additional information about one of the entities from the search records.

Search by Business Name

Access the Business Name Search like before. When performing a search by a business name, we can use different search methods.

Search Methods (from the most restrictive one):

  • Only exact words in exact word order
  • Exact words in exact word order but followed by anything else
  • Exact words in any word order
  • Sound-alike words in exact word order
  • Sound-alike words in any word order
  • Extended Search in any word order

Step 1

Click on the business name search box and enter the words to look for. Select one of the available search methods, depending on how restrictive you want your search process to be. On the right, you can select whether you want to search for all companies or only for active or inactive ones. Click on the Search for Business Name button below.

Step 2

If there are no search results, you’ll see the following message “Your search did not return business names”. If it’s possible, you can try to search again, using one of the less restrictive search methods. You can return to the search page by clicking on the New Search link on the left.

If there are search results that match your search criteria, you’ll see a list that includes the name of the entity, its registry number, type, and status.

Step 3

To access additional information about one of the entities, click on its name or registry number. Now you’ll be able to see the jurisdiction, registry date (as well as next renewal date and renewal due), foreign name, and non-profit type, as well as associated names and their details. You can also view the name history and summary history. If you want to request copies and certificates of business registry documents, follow the link above the summary history.

Search by Registry Number

Another way to perform the Oregon business entity search is by a registry number.

Step 1

Click on the search box marked as Registry Number and type the number. Click on the Search for Business Name button below.

Step 2

Since each of the business entities has its own registry number, there’ll be either one or none search results. If the number doesn’t belong to an entity, you’ll get the following message “Registry number (the number you searched for) has wrong check digit”.

And if the number does belong to an entity, you’ll be taken directly to the entity page.

Search for Individual Names

You can also search by individual names. Access the Business Registry Database from this link.

Step 1

Enter the names to search for. First Name and Last Name are required fields, while Middle Name is optional. Select whether you want to search for all associated name types or associated name types except Agent. Or you can select one of the associated name types below. Click on the Search for Associated Names button below.

Step 2

The search results will give you the same information about the business entity like the previous two search methods we used.

Oregon Business Entity Search Recap

Hopefully, after reading this step-by-step guide to Oregon business entity search you know how to access the required information about one of the entities and how to find out if the name you’ve chosen for your company is free for you to use or not.

Once you’re sure about the name you want to use for your future company, you can start the formation process or you can hire one of the LLC formation services, such as Zen Business, to take care of all the paperwork for you.

Nolo Review

Nolo Review

Nolo provides legal guidance, advice, and documents at relatively reasonable prices. Our Nolo review gives you the necessary details you need to make your decision.

So is Nolo legit?

Nolo is definitely legit. Nolo does a great job when it comes to basic features such as speed, customer service, and ease of use. The Nolo website also has a lot of helpful material and articles available for free.

About Nolo

Nolo is a legal help company offering DIY products, attorneys, and articles for individuals and businesses. The company has garnered a huge 48 years of legal authority, during which it has provided over a million consultation requests.

Nolo claims to have over 1.7 million products sold, which isn’t far-fetched given its age and popularity. But what exactly are these products and how do they stack up against competitors such as [RocketLawyer] and [LegalZoom]? That’s what we’re going to find out in this review.

How it Works

Nolo provides customized documents such as estate planning forms like Wills, living trust, power of attorney, and so in. They also provide business formation services including LLC formation and Registered Agent Service.

You also have the option to speak with a lawyer via the website’s “Find A Lawyer” feature. You simply give a brief description of your case, the computer matches you with the right lawyer, and you can proceed to hire the attorney.

Pricing

Nolo offers a lot of DIY products in their store for various prices. Their LLC formation pricing, however, comes in only two packages: the Basic service, and the Express Premiere Service.

  1. The Basic Service – $99 + State Fee: the basic service is pretty simple – you get a standard filing and shipping takes about 1 or 2 weeks and you get a customized LLC operating agreement. This is not a bad deal for $99 plus the state fee.
  2. Express Premiere Service $299 + State Fee: with this get your standard filing of an LLC operating agreement, and you also get a priority rush filing and shipping, which speeds up your filing process from two weeks to two days.

You also get personalized LLC record kits and seal, with 20 membership certificates, stamped with your company name.

Finally with the express premier service you get an IRS application for your federal tax ID number (EIN) filed for you.

Our Recommendation

We have to say that we particularly like Nolo’s two package system. It eliminates unnecessary divisions and price hikes, by giving two well-defined packages, with a clear audience in mind for both.

The basic package is obviously made for people who want to get the company registered and nothing else. They’re also not particularly in a hurry and are willing to get their EINs for themselves.

The premium package, on the other hand, is meant for people who, for some reason or another, need their filings done super fast, and wouldn’t mind getting all their own things done while the company takes care of other processes for them.

Nolo Benefits

  1. Find A Lawyer – Nolo’s Find a Lawyer feature is one of the few attributes that separates the company from its competition. While other companies may also have something similar, most of them don’t provide an actual attorney for hire but instead give you the opportunity to speak with them for a few minutes. Nolo actually pairs you with a suitable attorney and gives you the opportunity to continue working with them.
  2. Legal Encyclopaedia – Nolo offers a comprehensive store with numerous, highly educative materials available for purchase. The company is essentially building one vast legal encyclopedia to make your forays into the legal world more pleasurable.
  3. Materials – The company website also has a lot of helpful material and articles available for free. You can read more on a lot of law-related issues such as divorce and family law, criminal law, estate planning, intellectual property, and so on.
  4. Free Calculator – Among the “numerous helpful resources” we referred to above is a free calculator on the Nolo website, capable of giving you an estimate of your mortgages, car payment, investments, retirement, among others.

Other Features

  1. Speed – Nolo’s turnaround time of one to two weeks is practically standard industry practice; its TAT of two days for the express package, on the other hand, is quite impressive.
  2. Registered Agent Service – While Nolo itself does not offer Registered Agent Service, it does provide one through its partner commercial agent, Vcorp Services, for customers who wish to make use of a Registered Agent.
  3. The fee for this is undisclosed.
  4. Customer Service – Nolo has active customer service available on all weekdays from 8am to 5pm. It also has a contact option on the website through which customers can send a quick email.

Shortcomings

NOLO doesn’t seem to be as well-reviewed as some of its competitions. We think it may be because the company doesn’t pay much attention to customer follow-up.

There was also a considerable number of attorneys who claimed to be unsatisfied with the leads provided by Nolo.

Verdict

Nolo does a lot of things right through its undeniably useful features and resources like Find A Lawyer,  Legal Encyclopaedia, mortgage calculator, and so on.

It also checks the mark when it comes to basic features such as speed, customer service, and ease of use.

New York Business Entity Search Instructions

Even though you can perform the New York business entity search only by the corporation or business entity name and the search is pretty simple to use, there are some things you should know prior to starting the search. This will help you get the best possible search results.

To perform the search, you should access the New York State Department of State website, and select the Corporations & Business Entity Database Searches from the menu on the right or Businesses – Business Search from the main menu.

The Search Criteria consist of the Entity Name, Name Type, Search Type, and Captcha. All fields are marked with *, therefore all of them are required.

  • Entity Name – The first box is reserved for the entity name you want to search for. The search isn’t case-sensitive. If you select Contains or Partial as a Search Type, you must enter a minimum of four characters. Enter a larger portion of the name to narrow the search results.
  • Name Type – You must select one of the two available types from the drop-down list. You can either search for Active Only or for All (both active and inactive entities).
  • Search Type – You can choose between three Search Types from the drop-down list – Begins WithContains, or Parcial. When you select the Begins With, you must enter the exact beginning part or entire name of the entity to be searched for, while if you select Contains or Partial, it’s enough if you know at least one of the words that are contained in the entity name. The only difference is that if you select Contains, you must know the whole word, while for Partial you can enter only part of the last word to be searched for. The non-alphanumeric characters are required to be entered exactly as they appear in the name of the business entity.
  • Captcha – Next to the text box you’ll see some numbers you should enter. Don’t wait too long or the Captcha will expire (you’ll be redirected back to the search page).

The NYS DoS Division of Corporations puts in the effort to ensure that the information provided on its website is up to date and accurate. Below the page title, you’ll see the date to which the database is current.

New York Business Entity Search by Business Name

Step 1

Type the corporation or business entity name to the search box and select the name type (depending on whether you want to search for all corporations or business entities or only for the active ones). Select a search type. You can search for corporations or business entities whose names begin with or contain the selected words (or part of the word). Enter the numbers from the image below into the field marked as Captcha and click on the Search the Database button below (or click the Enter key on your keyboard).

Step 2

You’ll get the list with the names of the corporations and business entities that match your search criteria. If there are more than 500 search results, only the first 500 will be displayed. If this is the case, you should click on the Revise Search Criteria button below.

If there are no records that match your search, you’ll get the following message “No business entities were found for (entity name you entered) and you’ll be advised to refine your search criteria.

Step 3

If you want to view information for an entity, click on the hyperlinked entity name. The additional information will include the status information for the selected business entity (current name and status of the entity, type of the entity, DoS ID, initial DoS filing date, county, and jurisdiction) and the address information (DoS process address, and the name and address of the registered agent).

Below you’ll see the stock information (applicable to domestic business corporations), and the name history (which includes the filing date, name type, and entity name).

If the business you’ve been looking for is not on the first page, use the paging buttons (Previous Page and Next Page) or the hyperlinked page numbers to view additional business names.

To perform a new search, click on the New Search button below, which will lead you to the Corporations & Business Entity Database Searches.

After you are done reading, you will be able to make a well-informed decision.

MyCompanyWorks Pros and Cons

Benefits of MyCompanyWorks

  • Comprehensive LLC formation Packages. When you hire an incorporation service, they file your LLC formation papers and then forward them to you. Other things, such as how to set up the company, how to sign appropriate documents, holding organizational meetings, etc., are not part of the package. Without operating agreements, stock certificates, etc., you will still have a lot of legal work at your hands. However, this is not the case at MyCompanyWorks. They have comprehensive packages that not only help you incorporate your company but also provide the legal documentation necessary to get your company up and running.
  • Startup Wizard Feature. As new business owners, it is very likely that you don’t know how to adapt business operating agreements, issue stocks, formulate bylaws, etc. At MyCompanyWorks, they have an interactive online startup checklist, the Startup Wizard. Moreover, you will receive notifications informing you about the status of your filing. You don’t have to create multiple accounts even if you have to place several orders. You can keep track of all your orders from a single account. What’s more, you will get notifications regarding annual filing. With MyCompanyWorks, you get an online account dashboard where all your documents will be scanned and uploaded. They process your order within one business day without charging extra!

Cons of MyCompanyWorks

  • Registered Agent Service Only in Complete Package. Most of the LLC formation companies provide you with free registered agent services for one year when you choose any service plan. However, MyCompanyWorks provides this service only in their complete package, and not their basic packages.
  • Comparatively Expensive. Even though they have affordable rates as compared to professional lawyers, other LLC formation services provide you with the same features at less rates.

MyCompanyWorks Customer Reviews

No matter how good the services of a company may sound, if their users are not satisfied, then you should not choose that company. MyCompanyWorks has been providing excellent LLC formation services for almost 2 decades.

They have helped over 60,000 customers and have plenty of positive reviews online. The online reviews praise the availability and professionalism of the customer service representatives. Even though they don’t have the cheapest packages, their quality is good and offers quite a few perks in the form of same business day delivery and an online account dashboard.

Best MyCompanyWorks Alternative

You landed on this review looking specifically for information about MyCompanyWorks and their LLC formation services, but for us to provide a fair review we also need to make it clear that they may not be the best option, depending on your needs.

They do offer a good service but for a straightforward LLC formation, there are better alternatives. This is why for most entrepreneurs and business owners, we recommend ZenBusiness.

ZenBusiness is the recommended service because their price is incredibly low, the customer support is top-notch, and they include everything you would want when forming your company in a simple package intended to get your company formed fast.

To find out more, read our comprehensive ZenBusiness LLC review.

Is MyCompanyWorks Worth It?

Now comes the million-dollar question: Is MyCompanyWorks worth it? Unfortunately, we cannot give you a straightforward answer. If you are searching for an experienced LLC formation service and budget is not an issue for you, then you should go for MyCompanyWorks.

If you are operating on a budget and want registered agent services as well, then there are plenty of other options available in the market like ZenBusiness.

  • Cost value. MyCompanyWorks don’t offer a free trial nor do they have a free basic package. Even though their costs are low, they still charge for the services they provide and only their highest end package includes registered agent services.
  • Customer Service. Quality customer service is one of the selling points of MyCompanyWorks. You can reach their representatives via phone or email. Mostly, when you email any LLC formation service, they get back to you within 24 hours. If you email MyCompanyWorks, they respond as early as 20 minutes which is highly appreciable.
  • Ease of Use. With the help of the interactive startup wizard, placing an order with MyCompanyWorks is very easy. Moreover, you get access to an online account dashboard where you can store your legal documents safely. Their order filling process is easy, simple, and streamlined. Once you have selected the package that you want, it takes only 10-15 minutes to enter all the required information.
  • Privacy and Security. You will have to provide your personal info along with your payment details. MyCompanyWorks has the right to use this data for marketing purposes, customer services, etc. Moreover, Google Analytics will retain your browsing data as well. Therefore, if you don’t want your personal information to be used for any purpose, then you should choose some other formation service.

Bottom Line: If excellent customer services and positive feedback hold a lot of importance for you, then you should go for MyCompanyWorks. Otherwise, there are affordable LLC formation services that you can use.

MyCompanyWorks Review: Conclusion

When you start a new business, there are hundreds of things that you need to take care of. With so much going, there is no time to learn legal jargon and try to navigate your way through all the legal red tape.

It is a wise choice to use the services of a quality, affordable LLC formation service which will take a load off your shoulder by handling all your legal needs for forming a company. MyCompanyWorks is a well-established, quality LLC formation service provider.

They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee and if you are not satisfied with their services, you can ask for a refund within 90 days of your purchase. They have excellent customer feedback and users highly appreciate their speed and ease of use.

Their customer service is excellent as well. However, the downside is that they are not available on weekends. Moreover, on weekdays, they are available from 11 am to 7 pm (ET) only which is less as compared to other LLC formation services’ extended customer services hours.

Not only do they promise you the same business day processing, but MyCompanyWorks also guides you thoroughly each step of the process with the help of the intuitive Startup Wizard.

Other than the fact that they don’t provide registered agent services for all packages, there isn’t a major disadvantage that we see. Overall, we like their basic package which is reasonably priced at $79 considering the features and services you get.

However, their entrepreneur and complete packages don’t provide a lot of value, especially compared to their prices. If you are searching for an affordable LLC formation service, then there are better options like ZenBusiness in the market.

LLC vs Sole Proprietorship vs Corporation

When you are starting a new business, you will have to carefully and meticulously plan everything. If you are a small business owner who doesn’t want to form a partnership, you are left with three options.

  1. Limited Liability Company
  2. Sole Proprietorship
  3. Corporation

Every option comes with its own pros and cons, which are determined by your business’s type and your future goals. Let’s begin with addressing the basic differences between each type of business entity and then we will go from there!

Sole Proprietorship

If you don’t form a legal business entity and run your business on your own, you are running a sole proprietorship. In the eyes of law, you and your business are one in the same thing. This business structure is very risky – in case your business gets sued in the future, you will be personally responsible for liabilities, debts, damages, etc. With a sole proprietorship, you get no protection at all.

The business is basically an extension of yourself. All the losses and profits of the business will flow through your personal tax returns. All the business profits will be reported as the personal income of the owner.

Moreover, all the liabilities will flow through the owner as well.

One of the major advantages of an LLC over a sole proprietorship is that your liability is limited. You are not personally liable for any debts that LLC has. On the other hand, the sole proprietor is liable for all debts that the business has.

If you have a sole proprietorship, the creditors can go after your car, your home, and your other personal assets. In the case of an LLC, all your personal assets will be protected.

  • Best For: Sole proprietorship is perfect for those business owners who are running a home-based operation and don’t want any complexities.

As a sole proprietor, you can have a business name different from your personal name. With the help of a DBA (Doing Business As), you can choose a name for your business. However, you cannot use terms such as incorporated, LLC, corporation, etc. as part of your business name.

Advantages of a Sole Proprietorship

  • No Paperwork: When you are running a sole proprietorship, you will not have to fill any paperwork other than the one required for business-specific licenses and permits. For licensure requirements, you have to check with your state department as well as with the local government in your area.
  • No Annual Reports. You don’t have to submit annual state filings. However, some industries do require some filings, but they are majorly industry-specific.
  • Tax Requirements. As far as taxes are concerned, you are only going to be concerned with personal federal and state taxes. All the profits and losses will be passed through your personal tax return. You don’t have to pay any business taxes or unemployment taxes.

Moreover, you can enjoy the tax benefits of being self-employed by turning a few of your personal expenses into business expenses. For example, you can use your company car for personal use, write off travel expenses as business travel, write off costs to entertain clients, etc.

Furthermore, you can enjoy self-employed retirement plans such as SEP IRAs (Simplified Employee Pension Individual Retirements Accounts).

Disadvantages of a Sole Proprietorship

  • No Liability Protection. You will have absolutely no liability protection from debts, lawsuits, and any other legal issues. This means that you are personally responsible for any issue that your business faces which places your personal assets such as a home, car, etc. at risk.
  • Lack of Investors. You will face difficulty if you are trying to get some funds. Investors are more likely to trust LLCs rather than unknown individuals no matter how much potential you have. This can limit the growth and development of your business due to a lack of funds.
  • Difficulty Establishing Business Credit. Moreover, you will have a hard time building business credit as well. It is hard to get debt financing as banks and other financial institutions will consider the request as a request for a personal loan instead of a business loan.
  • Low Market Credibility. Your market credibility will be low as compared to other LLCs and established businesses in the industry. Customers are more likely to trust an established, authorized LLC rather than an individual doing business.

Limited Liability Company

An LLC is a legal entity and a business structure that you use to run your business or hold your assets such as aircraft, boats, real estate, etc. LLC is a business structure that is specifically designed to keep your personal assets separate and protected from liabilities of your business.

The owners of the LLC are protected from legal and financial liabilities of the business, including even their own negligence. The owners of an LLC are known as members. There are two types of LLCs based on the number of members.

  • Single-Member LLC
  • Multi-Member LLC

If the LLC is owned by one person only, it is a single-member LLC. If an LLC is owned by two or more persons, it is termed as a Multi-Member LLC.

When it comes to taxation, single-member LLCs are treated by the IRS similarly to the way they treat sole proprietorships. This means that you can attach your business income to your personal tax returns.

The requirements and process for forming an LLC vary from state to state. However, there are a few basic steps such as filing your articles of organization, assigning a registered agent, etc. that are common everywhere.

It is better if you get professional help from an expert LLC incorporation service such as ZenBusiness or IncFile and let them handle all the legal paperwork for you.

  • Best For: The major benefit of having an LLC is the legal protection that you get. For home-based businesses, sole proprietorships may be good enough but when your business starts to deal with multiple clients and customers, you have to go for an LLC.  When you are dealing with large sums of money, it is a good idea to separate your business and personal assets and with the help of an LLC, you can do exactly that.

Advantages of an LLC

Like everything else in the world, forming an LLC also comes with pros and cons. However, its advantages far outweigh a few cons it might have. Let’s take a look!

  • Market Credibility. If there is an LLC attached to your name, people would know that you are a legal, authorized entity and will not hesitate before doing business with you.
  • Liability Protection. This is probably the biggest advantage that an LLC gives to its owners. You will get liability protection against commercial debts, lawsuits, and a lot more. As long as you set your LLC up properly, you cannot be sued for any commercial activities.
  • Business Financing. You are more likely to get financing for your business. Creditors are happy to give out business loans to LLCs since an LLC is an authorized legal entity and has more credibility than an individual has.

If you get business credit, you will be able to expand and grow your business which will mean profits, success, and opportunities!

  • Taxation. You will get a lot of tax flexibility. You can choose to have your LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship or as a corporation, depending on your needs and requirements. You will have to pay a few additional taxes such as business franchise tax, etc. but this depends on the type of business you do and the geographical location of your company. You can choose to have your LLC taxed as a pass-through entity which allows you to file the taxes as your personal income tax returns.

Disadvantages of an LLC

As you will see below, the disadvantages that an LLC might have on paper can be easily mitigated by getting the right form of help from LLC formation companies. Let’s see what are the slight disadvantages of having an LLC.

  • Paperwork. There will be a lot of paperwork that you will have to take care of while forming your LLC. However, you don’t have to be worried because there are highly professional companies like ZenBusiness & IncFile that will take care of everything for you!
  • Annual State Filings. You will have to submit an annual business report with your state. It is likely that you will forget the deadline and miss the filing date. However, this can also be easily taken care of by the LLC incorporation company that you hire so all you have to do is sit back and relax as you watch your business grow.

For more detail on business taxation, we recommend that you get in touch with the highly competent customer service of ZenBusiness or Northwest Registered Agent and they will guide you thoroughly. Better safe than making mistakes, right folks?

Corporation

The third business structure option that you have is of forming a corporation. A corporation is mostly used to run a big company with various shareholders as well as investors. The owners of a corporation are known as shareholders.

After the formation of a corporation, you are legally obligated to form a “Board of Directors” who will oversee the company. Moreover, to run the day-to-day operations of the company, you have to choose “Corporate Officers”.

Big companies such as Apple, Microsoft, IBM, etc. are all corporations. The shareholders or stockholders own the company while the Board of Directors manages the organization. All the shareholders, directors, officers, etc. of the corporation are protected from the company’s liabilities, including personal negligence, except in a few special circumstances.

In a corporation, the profits/losses don’t flow through the owners’ personal tax returns. It is a separate legal entity that has to file and pay its own taxes.

The requirements of forming a corporation are different from one state to another. Usually, stock certificates are issued to the corporation’s owners along with paperwork that defines the purpose of the business as well as its location, along with hierarchical structure and a few operating rules.

It is our recommendation that you get professional help for forming your business entity so that you don’t make any errors in the paperwork that might create difficulties in the future.

  • Best For: Corporations are generally the best option for a business that has multiple owners who are bringing in significantly large investments. Moreover, to raise additional capital for the business by selling stock shares, you have to form a corporation.

Advantages of a Corporation

There are a few advantages of forming a corporation, such as personal liability protection, easy ownership transfer, etc. Let’s take a look at them briefly below so that you can make your decision easier.

  • Liability Protection. When it comes to liability protection, a corporation offers benefits similar to that of an LLC. Even if the corporation is sued and doesn’t have professional assets for repayment, the stockholders are not going to be responsible for any legal obligations or corporate debts.
  • Ownership Flexibility. The ownership of the corporation is dictated by the percentage of stocks that you own. This offers a lot of flexibility in terms of ownership transfer and business perpetuity as compared to other business entities.

Even though the specificities depend on the bylaws as well as the articles of incorporation, the ownership of a corporation is easy to sell and buy. Want to leave the corporation? Simply sell off your stocks!

  • Easy Access to Funding. It is very easy to raise funds in a corporation by selling stock. You can’t do this with any other business structure. This is not only great for growing your business but in times of need, it also keeps a corporation from going bankrupt.
  • Taxation. The type of taxes that you have to pay depends on the type of corporation you are running. C-corporations have to pay double taxation while S-corporations have various tax benefits according to the distribution of income.

S-Corporations have the choice of splitting the income between the shareholders & the business so that the tax rates are different. The income of the shareholders will be subject to payment of self-employment tax, while the remaining business money will be free from self-employment tax.

Disadvantages of a Corporation

There are a few disadvantages of forming a corporation as well, such as a lengthy application process, rigid protocols, etc. By taking a look at them, the choice will become even clearer for you and your business.

  • Lengthy Application Procedure. Even though filing your paperwork doesn’t take a long time if you take the help of an expert incorporation service such as ZenBusiness or IncFile, the overall process is going to take a long time. From drafting and maintaining corporate bylaws to appointing a board of directors, you are in for a long haul. And we haven’t even mentioned creating ownership business agreements and issuing of stock certificates!
  • Rigid Protocols and Formalities. Apart from the lengthy application procedure and the time it takes to form a corporation, there are various formalities and regulations that you have to follow in order to maintain the status of a corporation.

From following the bylaws to holding annual meetings of the board of directors, there are various formalities that you have to take care of which can be too much at times.  Moreover, there are limitations such as having only 100 shareholders for an S-corp, and that too all US citizens.

  • Double Taxation. Most corporations face double taxation. This means that the income of your business is taxed at the entity level and shareholder level as well. However, you can operate your corporation as an S-corp to avoid this but you will have to meet all the legal requirements for an S-corp in this case.
  • Expensive. It takes a lot of money to form and operate a corporation. It is easy for an established corporation to raise capital, but forming one needs a lot of capital as well. In addition to the filing charging taxes and ongoing fees, you will need plenty of startup money as well.

LLC vs Sole Proprietorship vs Corporation – Final Word

Now is the time for the million-dollar question: In LLC vs Sole Proprietorship vs Corporation, which is the best for me? As we already discussed, sole protection will provide you no liability protection and it will not help you gain credibility with investors as well as clients.

Corporations are not a bad business structure, but they are not for everyone. They are suited for big companies that have a large funding base. For most entrepreneurs who want to get their business off the ground, protect their personal assets, and get their hands on tax flexibility, an LLC is the best option!
